"Cassie" is another puppy onset DM case. She had been
on steroids prior to her donation to the TX A&M DM studies. "Cassie" was the second most severe
case of DM in shelties who had participated in the TX A&M DM studies. "Cassie" had crusty scabs on her face
and in her ear tips as well as on her forelegs when she arrived. Also intact, "Cassie" underwent her
first heat cycle less than six weeks after starting Trental therapy. Like "Brandi", she has required
higher doses of Trental to treat her DM symptoms. Her ear tips have cleared of all sores and hair
regrowth is apparent. Her face is also improving, as are her legs. In addition to the stress of hormone
fluctuations, "Cassie" has been one of our show and tell DM dogs. She went to the collie national in March
2000 and was visited by a large number of strangers which she found rather distasteful at first --
until the word spread that "Cassie" and especially "Miss Mouse" accepted treats as bribes!
The upper photo shows the large amount of hair loss over the bridge of the muzzle. Note in the lower
photo over fifty percent of this area has been reclaimed by hair growth.
Close observation will show areas of hairloss on both forelegs in the upper photo. The lower
photo shows a close up of the forelegs after five months of Trental therapy. Note the single lesion
now appearing on the right foreleg. The left foreleg is totally cleared of DM lesions.
