"Reagan" is a rescue sheltie who was found wandering the streets. His age was approximated at ten months and he already showed signs of a DM outbreak. At the time of his intake to the TX A&M DM studies program, only his face was affected and was hairless but without sores. Within two weeks, his face was severely affected. The photos show "Reagan" when one side of his face was covered in scabs. At the height of his outbreak all of his face from eyes to nostrils to lower jaw was covered in scabs, making it painful to open his mouth or completely open his eyes. He has also had a secondary bacterial skin infection, which required treatment with antibiotics. He now has hair loss over a large portion of his face and scattered over his feet and tail, but has no further scabs and the skin looks healthy. He is already regrowing hair on his tail. His DM was compounded by severe malnutrition, as this 15 1/2" dog weighed only 11.2 pounds when rescued. He lost a large amount of his coat over patches of his body and was covered with scaling skin. We are pleased to report that in four months time, "Reagan" has gained nearly 5 pounds and now is regrowing the coat on his body. We hope that with the increased dose of Trental, he may be able to regrow hair on his face as well. Notice the lesion in the ear as well as the lesions with scabs on his face. Sutures remain from the diagnosing biopsies. At the height of the exacerbation, "Reagan's" face was a nearly solid mass of scabs.
